Emeritus Professor of History of the Middle East, the Sixth President of Tel Aviv University and former Ambassador of Israel to the United States. In 2008 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society, and a foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.He was awarded by the Republic of Austria with the Honorary Grand Golden Cross and by the French Government with the title of Commander of the Ordre des Palmes Academiques.
In 2009, Prof. Rabinovitch won the Peace Prize of the Korn and Gerstenmann Foundation, together with Sari Nusseibeh, President of Al Quds University.
