אני היסטוריון של המזרח הקרוב (המזרח התיכון, הלבנט, האוריינט המערבי, אסיה המערבית וכו') בתקופה שבין הופעת האסלאם במאה השביעית לבין המאה השלוש עשרה. מחקריי עוסקים בעיקר ביחסים בין מוסלמים ולא-מוסלמים, בפרט יהודים ונוצרים, במגוון תחומי חיים. בשנים האחרונות עסקתי הרבה בשאלות הנגזרות מהתאסלמות ומשפחות רב-דתיות. בימים אלה אני כותב ספר על נשים כסוכנות של שינוי דתי בנסיבות של משפחות רב-דתיות במאות הראשונות להופעת האסלאם. בד בבד, אני מרכז קבוצת מחקר במכון ללימודים מתקדמים של האוניברסיטה העברית העוסקת בסוכנות תרבותית בעולם האסלאמי הפרה-מודרני (https://iias.huji.ac.il/cultural-brokerage-pre-modern-islam); וקבוצה נוספת, במסגרת מרכז חיפה לחקר ההיסטוריה של אגן הים התיכון, העוסקת בזיקות החופפות של הפרט לקהילה דתית ומשפחה (https://hcmh.haifa.ac.il/index.php/academic-activity/research-groups/16-academic-activity/118-kinship-and-community-in-the-early-and-medieval-islamic-mediterranean).
